BROWSER TECHNOLOGY

Internet developers are progressively trying to incorporate all of the many services available on the Internet into one software package called the browser. Presently, Netscape and Microsoft are in a head to head battle to see who can come up with the browser with the most bells and whistles.
While the increase of added features is a bonus to the viewer, it also adds a significant strain on your computer's system memory. The latest versions of browsers are memory hungry ravenous beasts and they want to use every little bit of your operating system.

Besides learning how to use the growing features of these browsers, you also need to be aware of certain MAINTENANCE procedures required to keep a browser happy and submissive.

CLEAR YOUR CACHE

CACHE FILES are files the Netscape Browser creates every time you visit a new Web Page. The browser stores a "copy" of the page with pertinent information on your Hard Drive. (For more technical information go to the Netscape Handbook.) These files build up rather rapidly and can cause confusion to the browser. A prominent symptom is when you get numerous "Can't find DNS Server..." errors.

You should CLEAR THE CACHE frequently (like every few days), especially after a long surfing session. Do this under the OPTIONS menu, NETWORK PREFERENCES.

SAVING TEXT FILES

Many people do not realize they can save the text on a web page as a TEXT file and open it later with their preferred Word Processor. Advantages: You can edit and format it any way you want; You donšt have to print all the graphics on a web page.

MAIL A WEB PAGE

If you find an interesting Web Page you would like to share with someone, while on the web page, select MAIL DOCUMENT from the File Menu. You should get an email form to address. The page will be attached. If the recipient is using Netscape 2.0 or better, the Web Page will appear in the email letter frame, links and graphics included.

The learning curve is vertical on the Internet. Avail yourself of the abundant resources online. In particular, visit the Netscape site periodically to keep up with the newest developments.
