Adding Wallpaper to Apple Systems
1. Click and hold on the browser image. A menu will
appear. Select "Save this Image as...". A navigation window will appear, asking
you to identify the folder in which you want to save the image. Select the desired
location and click OK or Save. (We recommend not placing images in the system folder, but
do place all images in a consistent location for ease of use). The image has now been
saved onto your hard drive.
2. Open the Control Panels, then Desktop Pictures.
Click on the Picture icon, then on the button marked Select Picture... Another navigation
window will appear, allowing one to maneuver to the folder containing the desired image.
Highlight the image and click the Open button. The image will appear in the preview window
in the Desktop Pictures window.
3. Click on the Position menu button. Several
options will be offered such as "Position Automatically", "Tile", etc.
Choose the desired display method (the preview window will show how each option will
appear on screen).
4. When the desired look has been achieved, click on
the Set Desktop button. Then close the Desktop Pictures window.
5. To change or update the desktop image, repeat the
same procedure. Note that if there is an existing desktop picture, the "Set
Picture" button will now read "Remove Picture". Click this first and then
proceed with the above process.
Adding Wallpaper to a PC running X Window in a Unix type environment
1. Copy the image using your browser's capture tool. For example in Netscape, click the rightmost mouse button and look for the 'Save Image' option in the menu. Select it.
2. After you've saved the image, become 'root' or 'superuser' if you are not already (which you shouldn't be).
3. Find the directory where the window manager for X Window resides. It will probably be something like /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/'window manager name'. The window manager will be something like 'fvwm2' or 'olwm' or 'afterstep', etc.
4. Using your favorite editor, open the parameter file (i.e., 'system.fvwm2rc' or 'system.steprc', etc.) and find the section listing the wallpaper. Add the location of your new image(s) and any other commands or parameters needed and save.
5. You should now be able to select your new image as wall paper from within the X Window manager. Remember to check your XWindow documentation for specific details. These instructions may vary dependant upon your Unix installation.
