CREATIVE EXPRESSION

In Esoteric Healing it is recognized that one of the major causes of unhappiness and distress is lack of self-expression. When the self feels confined, restrained or unable to express itself, there can be immense stress or strain on the nervous system resulting in numerous imbalances or problems that can lead to more serious diseases.

This suppression of the self often starts early in life as our environment tries to restrict our natural experience and spontaneity. Most pre-school children are natural explorers, they bubble with energy and have a desire to know and question everything. By the ages of 8-10 most children have already become more cautious and their spontaneous expression has begun to fade as they try to conform and please those around them, with the sad result of losing important parts of themselves.

It is no wonder then that by the time we reach adulthood our creative expression has been dulled and we feel tense and unfulfilled. Often there is a sense that something is missing, but we may search in vain, having no idea what it is that we are looking for or where to find it. What is missing is the freedom to express and be who we want to be, to reconnect with our deepest desires and creative potential which have been buried under layers of conditioning and holding back.

The potential is always there, waiting to take form, to find an outlet. The body reflects our pain and our holding and can also be a way in and the beginning of the process of release. Through movement, exercise, dance, body awareness and sound we can start to move the energy again and uncover what lies beneath the surface. Painting, free drawing, clay and mask work, poetry or any form of free artistic expression can help us to reconnect to the power which lies within. Creative expression can take any form or be formless, all that it needs is the movement of energy on some level and something important can begin to happen.

Having just spent ten very intense days with a wonderful group of person centered counselors (based on the work of Carl and Natalie Rogers) exploring the connection to the self through different modes of expressive therapy, I found myself on a fast moving rollercoaster. It took me on an incredible journey to different parts of myself, some were painful and forgotten parts of myself and some were blissful and joyful places which I didn't know exist, moving up and down with heightening sensitivity and awareness which continually unblocked my creative potential and allowed for further expression.

It is the journey that is so important, savoring, feeling,
acknowledging and learning every step of the way. Being open to the unexpected, seeing again through the eyes of a child, daring to be oneself again, not minding the criticism or opinions of others, living life to the full with passion and compassion.

May your creative spirit be set free and fly as high as the sky and far beyond to worlds as yet explored.
