Compassion in Action
(by Ram Dass)
"When we look at the vast sadness and suffering in the world, we
often experience intense pain in our hearts. The suffering so often seems
cruel, unnecessary, and unjustified ~ reflecting a heartless universe. The
human greed and fear that are causing much of the suffering seem out of
control. But when our hearts open in the midst of this, we want to help.
This is the experience of compassion.
Compassion is the tender opening of our hearts to pain and suffering.
When compassion arises in us, we see and acknowledge what we often push
away ~ the parts of life that cause us sadness, anger or outrage. The
powerful
awakening of our own compassion can tune us not just to the nurturing and
sustaining forces of the world, but to the oppressive and destructive ones
as well. When we open to these directly and become familiar with them,
instead of avoiding them as we often do, we are more likely to hear ways to respond
with love and support to relieve the suffering. When the pain is our own,
we want to end it. If we can't do this by ourselves, we long for help.
When it is not our cry, but someone else's, compassion allows us to feel it
as our own, to feel the same longing, to hear our hearts calling us to help.
The Dalai Lama has said, "Love and compassion are not necessities,
not luxuries. Without them, humanity cannot survive. With them, we can
make a joint effort to solve the problems of the whole of humankind."
Compassion is the basis of all truthful relationships: it means being
present with love ~ for ourselves and for all life, including animals, fish,
birds, and trees. Compassion is bringing our deepest truth into our
actions, no matter how much the world seems to resist, because that is
ultimately what we have to give this world and one another."

The universal human journey is one of becoming conscious of our power
and how to use that power. Becoming conscious of the responsibility
inherent in the power of choice represents the core of this journey.

People who truly love themselves do not become destructively
self-centered. They do not abuse others. They do not stop growing and
changing. People who love themselves well, learn to love others well
too. They continually grow into healthier people, learning that their
love was appropriately placed.

Sometimes we sense God's hidden power, but we
feel it as fear and we contract. But there is nothing
in God to inspire fear. Fear is only the label we put
on our own awe, and perhaps bewilderment, when
we sense God's power, a power we cannot possibly
comprehend, and we fear we are losing control.

The betrayal of the Son of God lies only in illusions,
and all his "sins" are but his own imagining.
His reality is forever sinless.
He need not be forgiven but awakened.
In his dreams he has betrayed himself, his brothers and God.
Yet what he has done in his dreams has not really been done.
It is impossible to convince the dreamer that this is so,
for dreams are what they are because of their illusion of
reality. Only in waking is the full release from them,
for only then does it become perfectly apparent that they had
no effect upon reality at all, and did not change it.
Fantasies change reality.
That is their purpose.
They cannot do so in reality,
but they can do so in the mind that would have reality be
different.

"There is beauty in everyone, everything, everyplace.
All
of life is either love or a call for love.
Underneath
the layers of any fears
is
always a call for more love.
Either
from your own soul,
yourself
to be reflected in your own world.
Outer
appearance means nothing it is only the light
within
one's heart that matters
no
matter who it is."

If, indeed, you can be taught, the Soul will awaken
itself on the physical level and dissolve all karmic

level and on all other levels.
At that moment, you become what we call one of

Find the Miracle
(by Alan Cohen)
"On a journey through a jungle, a king accidentally cut off his toe
while chopping a coconut. "That's wonderful," exclaimed his advisor.
"There is a blessing here." The king, angered at the advisor's flippancy,
threw him in a pit and left him there.
The next day, the king was apprehended by a band of headhunters who
decided he would make a good sacrifice. When the tribal priest noticed that
his toe was missing, the headhunters released him as an imperfect specimen.
Suddenly the king realized that the advisor was correct, and he returned to
the pit and apologize profusely.
"No apology necessary," said the advisor. "It was also a blessing
that you threw me in this hole."
"How is that?" asked the king, incredulous.
"Because if I was with you, the headhunters would have taken ME for
the sacrifice!"
Imagine that everything that happens to you is assigned by divine
order. If you look for miracles, you will find them."
Help me see the good in everything.
I am in the presence of love,
taken care of at all times in all ways."
